Movies of the twenty-first century have been blessed with the presence of hardworking actors. However, it is sad to see that not all of them are getting the recognition they deserve. Explore Talent is putting the spotlight on the most underrated movie actors of this generation. As of this writing, their undeniable talents have yet to be fully recognized by mainstream audiences and major award shows alike.
Find out who made the list below.
5 of the Most Underrated Movie Actors in Hollywood
1. Viggo Mortensen
Viggo Mortensen has one of the longest careers in Hollywood, but people cannot seem to separate him from his Lord of the Rings character Aragorn. Sure, Mortensen was amazing as the sword-wielding fighter, but he has done other roles that should have already put him in the ranks of Leonardo DiCaprio or Denzel Washington by now. For instance, Mortensen was amazing as a nameless character in the post-apocalyptic action film The Road, while his performance in History of Violence was not something that should be overlooked either.
In the recently held Oscars, Mortensen received a nomination for best actor for his performance in the film Captain Fantastic. Unfortunately, this is the last project listed in Mortensen’s filmography. Hopefully, this talented actor gets another shot at an Oscar gold in the future.
2. Gary Oldman
In a poll conducted by Ranker.com, British actor Gary Oldman was named as the greatest actor to have never taken home an Oscar. The new generation may know him as James Gordon in the Dark Knight Trilogy and as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series, but it was Oldman’s role as Count Dracula in Francis Ford Coppola‘s retelling of the classic novel that catapulted him to mainstream success.
Oldman finds himself on the list of Hollywood’s most underrated movie actors due to the fact that he was only nominated once for an Oscar for his work in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Hopefully, his upcoming role as Winston Churchill for the drama Darkest Hour will finally give him the recognition he deserves.
3. Jeff Goldblum
Jeff Goldblum has been in blockbuster movies such as Independence Day and Jurassic Park, but he continues to be one of the most underrated movie actors today. He’s almost always billed as a supporting character despite the fact that Goldblum has already done enough to prove that he could be a charismatic leading man.
As for future projects, Goldblum is attached to star in the movie Thor: Ragnarok. He is also working with frequent collaborator Wes Anderson for the stop-motion film Isle of Dogs.
4. Mads Mikkelsen
Mads Mikkelsen has become well-known for portraying antagonists. But there is more to Mikkelsen than those Marvel and Star Wars movies. For one thing, the talented Danish actor has over 20 years of fruitful experience in the acting industry under his belt. Despite not being as recognized in the Hollywood circuit, he continues to be one of the most respected actors in the international scene. Mikkelsen was particularly amazing in the 2012 Danish film The Hunt, where he played a kindergarten school teacher falsely accused of molestation.
The Hunt would was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, and that night, Mikkelsen managed to take home the Best Actor award.
5. Tom Hardy
Tom Hardy made his feature film debut in the Ridley Scott‘s 2001 war drama Black Hawk Down. He would later gain an international following with Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Warrior. For his early works, Hardy was awarded the 2011 BAFTA Rising Star Award.
Despite receiving equal success with his roles in Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant, Hardy is yet to be an Academy Award winner. It may be hard to believe that the talented British actor received his first and only Oscar nomination back in 2015 for a supporting role opposite DiCaprio in The Revenant.
