Role # 5 Don John
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Don John, bastard brother of Don Pedro
As the illegitimate son in an aristocratic family, Don John has been sidelined in the political and social world and has plenty of reason to be frustrated and bitter. At the beginning of the play he has just lost a war with his brother and is forced to “play nice” with the happy people around him, while secretly scheming to so some damage. A born bad boy, if we were playing this in the 1950s he’d head up a motorcycle gang.

Role # 8 Leonato
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Leonato, Governor of Messina
Longtime friend of Don Pedro and his governing representative in Messina. Respected by all in the local community, he is normally a man of a steady and generous temperment. He dotes on his daughter Hero, but his own political and social power depends on his reputation, particularly with the ruling Spanish aristocrats like Don Pedro. When suddenly put in the impossible position of defending both his daughter’s and his own reputations, he panics. In a Sicilian rage he determines first to kill Hero and then to kill Claudio. Not the collected patrician we thought we was after all.

Role # 9 Friar Francis
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Friar Francis (Antonio)
We are combining the roles of Antonio (Leonato’s brother) and the Friar in our production. The friar is a lifelong friend (a “brother”) of Leonato’s and native of Messina. He is an honorary member of the household and Leonato’s confidant and advisor. His fiery Sicilian temperament sometimes get the better of his clerical training but he most often provides a calming, thoughtful influence on Leonato’s domestic circle.

Role # 10 Hero
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Hero, daughter to Leonato
Sweet, demure and beautiful, Hero is the much beloved by all of Leonato’s household and particularly coddled by Beatrice and Ursula. Her innocence is so apparent in everything she does that her betrayal at the altar is shocking enough to put Beatrice into a homicidal temper. But she also is playful, eagerly inventing her part in the Prince’s plot to gull Beatrice into believing that Benedict loves her. Her “coming of age” in the play includes one delightful and unexpected bridezilla scene.

Age: from 18 to 35

Beatrice, niece to Leonato
One of Shakespeare’s great female roles. Like Benedict, she has a rapier wit and uses it to protect herself from love and the resulting lack of control. The heat between Beatrice and Benedict in love and war drives the story.

Role # 14 Dogberry
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Dogberry, constable of the Night Watch
The original Keystone Kop. Ostentatious in his dedication to duty and self-importance. A classic example of "a little knowledge can be a terrible thing," he constantly uses sophisticated words incorrectly and makes up for it by misinterpreting what others say to him. Huge source of fun in the play and eventually saves the day despite himself.
