Tips from Tyra Banks: Modeling 101

Tyra Banks is probably one of the best people to get modeling advice from; she used to host and produce America’s Next Top Model. Today, she has another project—Tyra Banks’s Fiercely Real Model Contest, where the winner is set with a Wilhelmina modeling contract, a trip to NYC for a Seventeen fashion shoot, $1,000 check, and a meet-up with the supermodel herself!

However, if you think you don’t want to join a contest to take a shot at modeling, here are some tips from the supermodel-turned-super-mogul herself on how you can step up to become the model you always wanted to be.

Model Dos and Don’ts

Do elongate your neck

Maximize extension to look more graceful in your pictures. Don’t be a “no-neck monster,” as Tyra describes it.

Do pose with grace

Looking elegant in a photo is all in the matter of posing, so don’t pose like a hoochie, and if you don’t know what a hoochie is, you are better off not knowing.

Do pose with body tension

Be aware of your body from head to toe. Don’t be a limp, lifeless noodle.

Do experiment with different poses

Mix up your photos. Have fun with and be wild. Don’t stay in the same pose—it might be safe, especially if you established the look that goes best for you, but it will get boring if you use it repetitively.

Do create intensity

Your eyes are the windows to your soul, so fill them with wonder for the camera. Don’t stare aimlessly when posing. As Tyra puts it, “Smize!” (Or smile with your eyes.)

Do make an impression

Show off your personality. Be distinct. Shine. Don’t be dull and unforgettable.

Do stand proud

Look strong and tall. Don’t slouch, you’re a model, for Pete’s sake! Pretend you have a wire through your spine that is keeping your spine erect.

Do model through!

Even when you hate your hair and makeup. Don’t let the little things affect your modeling performance. Even if you don’t like how you look, your makeup artist and photographer know what they are doing, so trust them.

Do request your favorite music

When you do a shoot, requesting to put on your favorite music will actually work wonders because the beat will kick up your poses. However, don’t be a total diva about your requests. Be nice!

Breaking in the Business

Find an inspiration

Pick your favorite model and study the things they do on the runway, to their head turns and photo op poses.

Take good snapshots

As a model, it is essential that you have a beauty shot, one that is taken from the neck up, to focus on your facial structure. Have a friend with a good camera take your beauty shot for you. For a more artistic look and feel, take it in black and white!

Study up

Gather info on things that you need to know as a model, such as fashion designers, photographers, supermodels, and everything else in between.

Notes for Go-Sees

As a crucial element in modeling, beginner models should know that they will have to go to lots of go-sees before they can make it big in the business.

Here are some tips to make lasting impressions:

Be prepared

Arrive at your go-see all ready with your walk, your pose, and your facial expressions. Practice them in front of the mirror and nail them before you leave your house.

Do your homework

Make it a priority to know something about the agency or client before you go. This research will also make you aware of whether or not you’re going to a legit modeling job or not. Scams are everywhere and you don’t want to fall victim.

Wear minimal makeup

Modeling without makeup? Yes, this is so that you can show off your natural beauty. Too much could be a distraction. Even your nail color should be minimal, so stick to simple clear, nude, or sheer shades.

Always bring a pair of heels

This is part of being prepared when you go to your go-sees. In case they ask you to walk, you’re prepared with your own pair of heels. Being comfortable in your own shoes makes a lot of difference.

Pull your hair back

Emphasize your face and bone structure. Work these assets.

Stand straight

Walk with your shoulders back: good posture is essential in modeling.

Be honest with your experience

It is okay to tell them if you don’t have a lot, at least you can impress them with your natural ability to look good in photographs and on the runway.

Never be late

It’s just good etiquette.

Work your flaws

While nobody is perfect, knowing how to look better in photos despite of them will take you far in your career. Look up tips to look better in photos so that you will know how to pose better. Are there any more tips for up and coming models that you can think of?
